Brisbane snow

This is the strong polar feed and extreme east coast low that produced actual falling snow (not sleet) in downtown Brisbane and Fortitude Valley early on the morning of Wednesday 4 July 1984*. None settled of course, but much did on the surrounding ranges.

Data is from the new NCEP-DOE Reanalysis 2, plotted by NOAA’s NOMADS server (now off-line due to US government cuts, and likely to remain so).

* I saw it, as did several others. Reports are actually from the 3rd, but that doesn’t look right given the surface chart (I need to check the newspaper archives). That same source lists another Brisbane snow event with more observers … in September 1958, also “in my lifetime”, just.
